Diabetes is caused by having too much glucose (sugar) in the blood. This happens because either the pancreas cannot make insulin or the insulin it does make doesn't work properly.
More than 200,00 people in New Zealand have diabetes and about 90% of these have Type 2 diabetes.
An estimated further 100,000 people have diabetes but have not had it diagnosed.
Every day 40 more people are diagnosed with diabetes.
Diabetes costs New Zealand over $250 million a year and could cost over a billion dollars bt 2021.
In Type 1 diabetes no insulin is produced.
In Type 2 diabetes insulin does not work properly or not enough is produced.
Type 2 diabetes can mostly be prevented by choosing a healthier lifestyle such as being regularly active and eating healthier foods.
This lifestyle is important both for people with diabetes and for people who may be at risk of develping diabetes.
It's also good for the whole family or whanau.
The good news is that diabetes can be managed and help is available to help you do this.
In the Nelson / Tasman region there are free community education sessions available for anyone wanting more information about Type 2 diabetes.
Diabetes NZ Nelson has an information centre in Halifax Street, Nelson and your general practice team can offer lots of support options if needed.
For information about the free community diabetes education sessions phone Bee Williamson on 0800 731 317 or email: Bee.Williamson@nbph.org.nz
