Potential Savings on Electricity?

Are you aware that you could benefit from changing to a low user pricing plans if your electricity usage is less than 8,000kWh a year? (Although, the benefits are likely to be marginal if you use between 7,000kWh and 8,000kWh a year.)

The low user plans provided by your electricity supplier have a lower fixed daily charge than the standard options and a higher variable charge for the electricity used. Ring your supplier if you think you could benefit by changing to this type of plan

Switching Electricity Suppliers

We have been receiving quite a few queries lately regarding switching between suppliers of electricity to householders.

The process is quite simple,- it doesn't cost you anything to make the switch unless there are special charges such as making a final reading or any bond required with the new retailer. Make a point of asking if there are any charges involved. You may have different reasons for making a move eg to save money or lately some people have wanted to send a message to their retailer that they're not happy with the price increases coming through.

One way to find out whether you can save money on current pricing (if you have internet access) is to use PowerSwitch at http://www.consumer.org.nz/powerswitch/ this site also has more information on the switching process. If you use this site it will help if you have a copy of a recent power bill with you. You can also confirm with your proposed new retailer what the costs will be so you can make a comparison.

The diagram below outlines the process that takes place:-

Note that most of the work is carried out by the retailers. What you have to do is initiate the process and be sure that you know what you will get by switching. Note also that you will most likely have to enter into a new contract - make sure that you are aware of any relevant conditions in any new contract.
